What Aetna looks for before approving ABA
Aetna’s ABA Medical Necessity Guide and Clinical Policy Bulletin 0648 describe what a request for ABA must include:
- A documented autism spectrum disorder diagnosis from an appropriate provider, such as a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician. A behavior analyst does not make the diagnosis.
- A standardized assessment of your child’s current skills and day-to-day functioning, completed within the past 12 months (for example the Vineland-3, ABAS, VB-MAPP, or ABLLS).
- An individualized treatment plan with clearly defined target behaviors, baseline measures, measurable goals, and plans for generalization, gradually reducing hours, and discharge.
- Parent or caregiver involvement, including measurable caregiver goals.
- Services provided or supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or licensed behavior analyst.
Aetna evaluates a member’s progress every six months, so your BCBA re-assesses your child and submits updated goals and data to continue services. The guide lists typical weekly hour ranges rather than fixed caps: the hours approved depend on your child’s assessed needs and your plan.
Prior authorization (precertification)
Aetna’s behavioral health precertification list includes the ABA assessment and treatment codes, so services begin only after Aetna approves them. Aetna also notes that in Texas, precertification is not a guarantee of payment. Our team assists with the assessment and treatment requests once intake is complete.
Is your Aetna plan fully insured or self-funded?
In Texas this makes a real difference. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) regulates fully insured plans, which must follow state coverage laws. Self-funded employer plans are regulated by the U.S. Department of Labor under federal law (ERISA) and set their own benefits. If your member ID card shows “TDI” or “DOI,” the plan is fully insured.
For state-regulated group plans, Texas Insurance Code §1355.015 requires coverage of generally recognized autism treatment, including ABA, for a child whose diagnosis was in place before their 10th birthday. For enrollees age 10 and older, those plans are not required to cover more than $36,000 of ABA a year. Many plans cover more than the law requires, which is why we check your specific plan.
Aetna Better Health of Texas (Medicaid and CHIP)
Aetna Better Health of Texas is a separate Medicaid and CHIP managed care plan with its own provider network. Texas Medicaid covers ABA for members age 20 and under, delivered through each Medicaid plan’s network. If your child’s coverage is Medicaid or CHIP, call the number on the member ID card to find an in-network ABA provider, or call us and we will tell you whether we can help.
How Vivid handles your Aetna benefits
- You contact us and share your child’s insurance information.
- We verify your Aetna ABA benefits, including eligibility, network status, and cost share, and review known costs with you.
- We collect the diagnosis report and any referral your plan requires.
- Our BCBA completes the assessment once it is authorized and writes the treatment plan.
- We assist with the treatment authorization request, match staff with your child, and begin services.
The full process is on our How to Get Started page. Insurance verification and authorization do not guarantee payment; coverage is determined by your plan’s terms.
